About the Flying Islands Pocket Poets’ Series

Running since 2010 (as an activity of the Macao-based community publisher, ASM), Flying Islands has, at the time of writing, published almost eighty volumes of pocket poetry. Little books full of poetry from all over the world, but more from Australia and China than from anywhere else. Some of these are translated bilingual parallel-text volumes (mainly Chinese and English, but also involving translation from French, Indonesian, Filipino, Lithuanian, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Norwegian and Bosnian). Most are English-only collections. An emphasis on Macao, and nearby in China, and on the Hunter region in Australia, is a matter of circumstance and not the result of any perceived obligation. Flying Islands is committed to the idea of poetry as a cosmopolitan and inclusive event, not something that needs to be conducted on a national basis. Flying Islands is a non-profit community publisher, and has, since inception, kept its RRP for book sales at $10. Flying Islands operates largely within a gift and exchange economy, so the price of the books is largely irrelevant, as long as we’re able to keep printing! Please note that though authors, artists, translators and designers get copies in ‘fee’, no one gets paid a wage for our activities. All of the money we collect goes back into printing and posting new books. Donations are welcome as are other forms of support. Like the blog that represents it, the Flying Islands Pocket Poets Series is intended to be a safe place for poetry. Not a clique or cabal or a stable, rather an expanding circle of poetry all sorts – for an expanding circle of friends who share poetry.
